4. Product Information
Years

Duration must exceed 2 years for the label to be eligible.

Official EU source

Not legal advice. The accuracy of the information and the eligibility of the label are the sole responsibility of the user.

Legal guarantee notice vs. GARAN label

When goods are sold to consumers in the EU, two harmonised markings matter: the legal guarantee notice is always mandatory. The GARAN label is additionally mandatory for certain commercial guarantees of durability offered by producers.

EU legal guarantee notice

Ready-made EU template
The harmonised notice informs consumers about the legal guarantee of conformity, above all that every consumer in the EU has at least 2 years of legal guarantee protection for any consumer goods sold in the EU.

Obligation

Always. From 27 September 2026 for all goods sold to consumers.

Where to obtain it

The EU provides the notice in several languages. The entire notice is fixed and must not be altered.

Get the notice from the official EU portal

Placement

  • In a shop: display it prominently, for example at the entrance door, as a poster on a wall or in an aisle, and at the counter. Print it in CMYK, at A4 or larger, in a quality that stays legible over time. It must not be distorted, cropped or folded, so that readability is ensured and the QR code remains scannable.
  • Online: display it prominently, for example as a general reminder in the site header, on the product page or at check-out. A sentence such as “Your legal guarantee rights” opens it on the first click or roll-over. In RGB, legible at default size, with a link to the destination of the QR code and also in the confirmation email.

EU GARAN Label

Create it with this tool
The EU harmonised GARAN label stands for a commercial guarantee of durability, expressed in years, that a producer offers voluntarily.

Obligation

From 27 September 2026, if the producer's guarantee meets the following requirements:

  • Free of charge: at no additional cost to the consumer
  • Entire product covered: not just individual components
  • More than two years: beyond the legal guarantee

Where to obtain it

The EU provides a template for the label. Only brand, model and guarantee duration may be edited, everything else is prescribed.

Placement

  • In a shop: clearly linked to the specific product, for example on the shelf next to it, on the packaging or as a tag or adhesive label on the product. Printed in CMYK, at least 95 x 100 mm, preferably in colour (black and white is allowed) and only in full, never as a nested label.
  • Online: clearly visible before purchase and tied to the product, for example on the product page (in the product image, the gallery or the description), directly before ordering and in the confirmation email. In RGB, legible at default size, with a link to the destination of the QR code. Where space is limited, the nested label may stand in and opens the full label on click or roll-over.

Frequently Asked Questions About the EU GARAN Label

1 When must the EU GARAN label be used and when not?

From 27 September 2026 the label is mandatory if you voluntarily give consumers a manufacturer guarantee that meets all three requirements:

  • Free of charge: The guarantee involves no surcharge, subscription or additional fee.
  • Entire product covered: It applies to the whole product, not just individual parts such as the motor or battery.
  • More than two years: The term exceeds the statutory legal guarantee, so at least 2.5 years.

Important:

  • If the requirements are met, the label must be used, even though the guarantee itself is voluntary.
  • If one requirement is missing, the label must not be used.
2 What is the difference between the legal guarantee and a commercial guarantee?
  • Legal guarantee: It always applies. Consumers in the EU are entitled to it for at least 2 years for all consumer goods sold in the EU, and the claim is against the seller.
  • Commercial guarantee: A voluntary additional service from the manufacturer, which can also last longer than two years. It does not replace the legal guarantee but comes on top of it.

That is why there are two notices: The legal guarantee notice is always mandatory from 27 September 2026, the GARAN label only for a guarantee that meets additional requirements.

3 What do sellers and retailers need to consider for the GARAN label?

Sellers and retailers must display the label prominently so that consumers can see which products come with the guarantee.

  • In store: Clearly assigned to the respective product, for example on the shelf, on the packaging or as a tag. Only in the full version, not as a nested label.
  • Online: Clearly visible next to the product before purchase, right before the order and in the confirmation email.

The exact requirements for size, colour and placement are in the GARAN label section further up.

4 Which parts of the label can be customized?

Only three details may be customized:

  • Brand: The name of the producer granting the guarantee.
  • Model: The designation of the product the guarantee applies to.
  • Guarantee duration: The duration in years, whole or half (e.g. 3 or 3.5). Other values such as 4.1 are not permitted.

Important: Everything else is fixed and may not be moved, altered or removed: the GARAN logo, the EU shield, the calendar symbol with 365, the QR code and the block with the 24 languages.

The customizable details are set in the Inter typeface.

5 Where does the QR code lead?

Both templates contain a fixed QR code that leads to the EU portal "Your Europe":

The QR code must not be altered. Online, a link to the same destination must also be placed next to the label.

6 What is the nested label and where should it be used?

The nested label is the compact variant with only the calendar symbol, the duration and the GARAN emblem. The EU permits it on small screens and in product overviews.

Condition: On first interaction (mouseover, click or tap), the complete GARAN label with QR code, brand and model must open.

Important: In physical print (in store or on packaging), the nested label is expressly prohibited.

7 When is black and white allowed?
  • Digital (online): colour only. On digital surfaces such as online shops, banners and order confirmations, the full colour variant is mandatory.
  • Printed: colour or black and white. For packaging, hangtags and shelf labels, full colour is the standard variant. Black and white is also permitted in store.
8 May the language block be shortened?

No. The block with the notice "Manufacturer's guarantee in years" in all 24 official languages is a fixed part of the label, even if you only sell in one country (one language). It may not be shortened, hidden or replaced by a single language.

9 Which guarantee duration can I enter in the tool?

The label is only permitted for guarantees that last longer than the statutory two years. That is why the tool starts at 2.5 years and goes up to 99 years. Up to 10 years, half years are possible (e.g. 3.5), above that only whole years, so that the number fits cleanly into the label. Your entry is automatically rounded to the nearest permitted step: 4.3 becomes 4.5 and 12.5 becomes 13.

10 Which format do I get the label in and how do I embed it?

The label is a ready-made template that you can use for banners, product pages and confirmation emails. The tool offers three formats:

  • SVG: Vector graphic, freely scalable without loss of quality.
  • PNG: Pixel image of 1077 × 1134 pixels (full label) for systems that do not support SVG.
  • HTML: An embed code to copy, which lets you place the label directly on your website.
11 How does the GARAN label relate to the digital product passport?

Legally, they are two separate regulations that do not depend on each other:

  • GARAN label: A consumer notice at the point of sale, regulated in Directive (EU) 2024/825 and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960. It shows that the manufacturer gives a voluntary guarantee.
  • Digital product passport: A digital data record about the product, accessible via a data carrier such as a QR code. It is based on the Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 and is being introduced step by step for individual product groups.

The label does not replace a product passport, and a product passport does not replace the label. The QR code of the label leads to the EU portal "Your Europe", not to the product passport.

With itemactive you can additionally store the guarantee terms directly in the product passport, so that they are available in the same place as the rest of the product information.
